Chapter 45: What do YOU think?

What do YOU think about the information Dr. Mark Hyman presents in this video?

It took about a year to make all of the changes my psychiatrist recommended at the Amen Clinic.  The dosages of my medications are stable now and I feel good!  The improvement was slow, steady, and subtle.  I have the desire to do things again.  I look forward to what I have planned each day when I wake up in the morning, instead of dreading it.  If you are new to my blog, Chapter 42 summarizes my road to recovery.

Chapter 42: FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT

This video was made before Dr. Hyman's book, The UltraMind Solution, was finished.  You know I think the book is great if you have read other chapters in my blog. =)   I think this book is a must read if you have depression symptoms.

In the video, Dr. Hyman talks about 7 things you can do to help improve depression symptoms.

1.  Try an anti-inflammation elimination diet and remove food allergens
2.  Check for hypothyroidism
3.  Treat vitamin D deficiency
4.  Take Omega 3 Fats
5.  Take adequate amounts of B12, Folate, and B6
6.  Check for mercury toxicity
7.  Exercise vigorously for 30 minutes, 5 times per week.

Why Antidepressants Do Not Work For Treating Depression
Mark Hyman, M.D.

Dr. Hyman acknowledges that some people do not heal completely by using the UltraMind Solution.  In the "Special Considerations" section of the book, The UltraMind Solution, page 387, Dr. Hyman says:

When You Need Therapy

"Sometimes it is not a toxin, allergen, infection, or nutrient-poor diet that makes us depressed or mentally ill.  Sometimes it is just life itself---a divorce, childhood trauma, the death of a loved one, a crazy boss, or a major trauma.
During those times in life, seeking help from a trained psychotherapist, a social worker, or even a personal coach can be lifesaving and may help guide you through troubled times.
In traditional cultures, the family and social structure provided a container and meaning for all life's events.  Today, unfortunately, many of us are left alone to struggle through life's transitions and questions.  Getting support can help you heal and recover along with the UltraMind Solution."

When You Need Medication

"As a former emergency room physician, I recognize that extreme times call for extreme measures.  I use and support the intelligent, appropriate use of medication, including psychotropic medications when needed.  They can often be helpful as a bridge for recovery from all the stresses and toxins that affect our brain and mind.
It may take months or years to heal from damage that has occurred over a lifetime.  In extreme cases, the damage may be so deep that full recovery is not possible using the UltraMind Solution (although most see remarkable results in a few weeks).  In some cases, combining medication with the tools of the UltraMind Solution can give people their lives back.
Working with an experienced psychopharmacologist who welcomes the integration of nutrition, supplements, exercise, and mind-body therapies is sometimes a necessary step to recovering a whole life.
Many times medications can be reduced or eliminated after applying the principles found in the UltraMind Solution."

I am one of "the cases" where combining medications with the tools of the UltraMind Solution gave me my life back.  Thank you Dr. Daniel Amen, and everyone at the Amen Clinic in Newport Beach, California.  The psychiatrist I worked with at the Amen Clinic was exceptional!  Thank you Dr. Mark Hyman for The UltraMind Solution.  I learned so much from the book and the changes I made to my diet and lifestyle helped me heal.  Thank you Eckhart Tolle for helping me change the way I think.  Reading the books, The Power of Now, and A New Earth, taught me to live in the moment.  Doing this brings me peace!

I am still saving my money to go to the The UltraWellness Center in Lennox, MA.  I need their help to find out if I could be off medications and still be free of depression symptoms, or if I am one of those people who will still need medication even if my body is balanced.

Chapter 42: FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT

I would definitely describe the symptoms of depression as darkness.  To bring the light back in to my body and life has taken all of the following:

Trip to the Amen Clinic in Newport Beach, California:  a higher level of education to diagnose and treat my specific psychiatric disorders.  The SPECT brain scans provided information to help in prescribing medication that had the highest chance of being effective for me.

Chapter 29: Do you know what your Vitamin D level is?

This is funny!  Best_DUI_Ever

Do you know what your Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy level is?

In November of 2007 I had some blood work done and found out my Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy level was 20, LOW. The huge normal range is 30-150, and a toxic level for most people is above 150. At the time I was surprised because my diet was pretty healthy. After doing some reading about the subject, I am not surprised because I wasn't spending 15-20 minutes in the sun everyday without sunscreen. (Or with sunscreen either!)

I started taking 2,000 IU of Vitamin D a day and had good intentions of getting more sun. Then, December of 2007 came around and I made the fateful decision to come off my antidepressant, Zoloft, and try an amino acid therapy for depression. Well, the rest is history (a miserable one) and has already been documented in previous blog posts. For the next year my Vitamin D level was not a high priority for me. I felt there was a long list of things I "should" do, and didn't feel well enough to do very many of them.

In March of 2009 I had blood work done again and my Vitamin D level was 26. Yeah, I know it didn't come up much. The amount of Vitamin D I was taking and feeling depressed and sick in the house wasn't very effective. My doctor started me on a 50,000 IU capsule of a prescription Vitamin D, the generic for Drisdol, that I took once per month. In February of 2010 I started taking the supplements Dr. Hyman recommends (See Chapter 12:  I Hate Clonazepam, Supplements) so I was taking 3,200 IU of Vitamin D each day, and 50,000 IU once per month.

In April of 2010 my blood work showed a Vitamin D level of 45. In the gigantic normal range! Maybe I don't absorb it very well. =) My psychiatrist at the Amen Clinic recommended I get my level up to at least 70, because it has a good chance of improving my mood. My doctor here at home is helping me and I am now taking a 50,000 IU capsule every two weeks and 3200 IU every day. I will be tested again in January of 2011; if I am not up to 70 I will begin taking the 50,000 IU capsule every week. I know it would help if I spent some time in the sun, but you know I don't have a good track record for this. I am going to try!

I am hoping a higher Vitamin D level will be one more thing contributing to overcoming the depression symptoms. One more piece of the healing depression puzzle. For me this puzzle has been difficult. I will keep you posted.

I am in the process of reading the book, The Vitamin D Solution, A 3-Step Strategy to Cure Our Most Common Health Problem, by Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D., Foreword by Andrew Weil, M.D. Dr. Holick says having enough Vitamin D can prevent and treat Osteoporosis, Heart Disease, Cancer, Autoimmune Diseases, Depression, Insomnia, Arthritis, Diabetes, Chronic Pain, Psoriasis, Fibromyalgia, and Autism. . .as well as other diseases, chronic conditions, and mild ailments. Wow, it is important. Is the sun out today?

Chapter 23: Angry At The Disease

I am angry at the disease depression and I need to put the reasons why in writing.

I am tired of:

having withdrawal symptoms from every psychiatric medication I have stopped taking.

having side effects from every psychiatric medication I have started.

having to wait 4-8 weeks to see if a medication is going to be effective.

needing medications that are expensive.

having a psychiatrist who tried 15 different drug combinations in a year and a half with few results; and then didn't support me after I went to the Amen Clinic for help.

"traditional psychiatrists" using an educated guess in determining which medication would be effective for me.  They decided after hearing my list of symptoms.  Other medical fields look at the organ they are treating.

letting things I need to do just sit.

having everything I do take so much effort.

having to put my life on hold because I don't feel like doing anything.

having thoughts that come from a brain not functioning correctly, not from anything real.

having things that were important to me lose their value.

not having any energy.

not finding pleasure doing things I used to enjoy.

not feeling well enough to attend activities.

my body not creating enough neurotransmitters on its own.

people I love having to deal with this disease.

having a genetic predisposition for depression.

not having advanced medical care in the treatment of depression where I live.  I needed to go to another state.

families and friends losing someone they love because of suicide.

depression causing extreme misery.

available technology not being used with every patient it could help.  SPECT Brain Scans and the research that goes with them gives a psychiatrist more information to diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders.  The Amen Clinics have been using this technology for about 10 years.

Information from, The UltraMind Solution, by Mark Hyman, M.D.
Taken from pages 11 and 12; book published in 2009
  • Psychiatric disorders affect 26 percent of our adult population or more than 60 million Americans.
  • More than 20 percent of children have some type of psychiatric disorder.
  • More than 40 million people have anxiety.
  • More than 20 million people have depression.
  • One in ten Americans takes an antidepressant.
  • The use of antidepressants has tripled in the last decade.
  • In 2006, expenditures on antidepressants soared to over $1.9 billion.
  • Psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety are expensive.  They are among the top five most costly medical conditions, including heart disease, cancer, trauma, and lung disorders.  The cost to our health-care system exceeds $200 billion a year, which is over 12 percent of total health-care spending.
  • Alzheimer's disease will affect 30 percent (and some experts say 50 percent) of people over eighty-five years old, which is the fastest-growing segment of the population.  It will affect 16 million people by 2050.
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a label we now give 8.7 percent of children between the ages of eight and fifteen.
  • More than 8 million, or one in ten, children now take stimulant medications like methylphenidate (Ritalin).
  • Autism rates have increased from 3 in 10,000 children to 1 in 166 children--an elevenfold  increase--over the last decade.
  • Learning disabilities affect between 5 and 10 percent of school-age children.
  • The indirect costs of all these broken brains to society are mammoth.  They include loss of productivity at school, home, or in the workplace, accounting for a loss of over $80 billion a year.

Thanks for reading.  My heart goes out to everyone who is angry and tired of depression!

Chapter 21: Healing A "Broken Brain"

"Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen
and thinking what nobody has thought."

                                                            Albert Von Szent-Gyorgyi Nagyr
Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine
The scientist who isolated vitamin C

Mark Hyman, M.D., author of, The UltraMind Solution, states on page 7, "Your brain is broken.  You know it.  You feel it.  You hide it.  You fear it.  You have been touched by an epidemic.  It deprives children of their future, the elderly of their past, and adults of their present.

No one is talking about this invisible epidemic.  Yet it's the leading cause of disability, affects 1.1 billion people worldwide---one in six children, one in two elderly---and will cripple one in four people during their lifetime.

I am talking about the epidemic of broken brains.

We refer to our "broken brains" by many names---depression, anxiety, memory loss, brain fog, attention deficit disorder or ADD, autism, and dementia to name a few.

This epidemic of brain breakdown shows up in radically different ways from person to person so that they all seem like separate problems.  But the truth is that they are all manifestations of a few common underlying root causes.

These seemingly different disorders are all really the same problem---imbalances in the seven keys to UltraWellness.

Dr. Mark Hyman on Good Morning America, January 16, 2009
Interviewed by Jeremy Hubbard, abc News

Dr. Hyman has seen many of his patients heal their broken brains by treating their bodies.  He believes brain problems are found in the biology of your whole body.  He has found brain disorders are almost always systemic disorders, and the cure will be found outside the brain and in your body.

Dr. Hyman also believes some people may have a genetic predisposition making it more difficult for their bodies to create neurotransmitters.  This is true even if these people are applying the changes suggested in The Seven Keys to UltraWellness.  I think I am probably one of these people.  The Seven Keys to UltraWellness made so much sense to me I wanted to implement them.  I believed they would contribute to helping me feel better, even if they didn't "heal" my depression.

On page 387, Dr. Hyman says, "As a former emergency room physician, I recognize that extreme times call for extreme measures.

In some cases, combining medication with the tools of the UltraMind Solution can give people their lives back."

When I first started reading, The UltraMind Solution, I wondered if Dr. Hyman believed every person could heal their "broken brain" by treating their body systems.  If you choose to read the book and read the first 75 pages you may wonder the same thing.  I included the information above because I didn't want that thought to detract from the brilliance of the book.

I love this book, and in the coming chapters of my blog I am going to share more information of The Seven Keys to UltraWellness and how they have made my life better.

On Monday morning I raised the dose of Effexor XR to 187.5 mg.  After lowering the dose of Luvox when I began 150 mg of Effexor XR, I had some depression symptoms return.  So I went back on 25 mg two times a day.  I am staying on that dosage until I feel Effexor XR improving the depression symptoms.  I did not feel any side effects from Effexor XR until several days into taking 150 mg.

"For the great enemy of truth is very often not the lie---deliberate, contrived, and dishonest---but the myth---persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.  Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forbears.  We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations.  We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."

Chapter 12: I Hate Clonazepam, Supplements

I have been off clonazepam for 10 days.  I would not want to go through the withdrawal symptoms without the help of Neurontin and the supplements recommended by my doctor at the Amen Clinic.  Going off the drug caused increased anxiety, irritability, and not being able to sleep as well.  I went back to taking 300 milligrams of Neurontin four times a day.  Increasing the dosage from 1200 mg a day to 1500 mg a day made me so dizzy it was hard to function.  If the anxiety gets too uncomfortable, I open a 300 milligram capsule of Neurotin, put a little bit in an empty capsule and take it.

These are the supplements that have been extremely helpful to me:

Restful Sleep: Serving 4 capsules   4/bedtime
Vitamin B6 10 mg, Magnesium 100 mg, Melatonin (immediate release) 2.5 mg, Melatonin (controlled release) 2.5 mg, Valerian 600 mg, GABA 100 mg.

Neuro PS:  Serving 1 capsule   2/bedtime
Phosphatidyl Serine 120 mg, Phosphatidylcholine 72 mg, Phosphatidylethanlamine 54 mg, Phosphatidylinositol 30 mg.

Brain Vitale:  Serving 2 capsules   2/morning
Acetyl L-Carnitine 500 mg, GlyceroPhosphoCholine (GPC) 200 mg, Inositol 200 mg, Phosphatidylserine 120 mg, GinkgoSelect Phytosome 90 mg.

I have continued with the diet changes I talked about in Chapter 7.  I am also taking the supplements Dr. Mark Hyman recommends in his book, The UltraMind Solution.  I believe giving my body the nutrients it needs will help it heal.  This is what is included in the The UltraMind Solution Essentials Kit.

There are days this seems like a lot of supplements to be taking, but I am starting to feel small glimpses of feeling better!  Being sick has motivated me to give my body the nutrients it needs.  The UltraMind Solution is a comprehensive guide to helping your body and brain be healthy.

Mark Hyman, M.D. states the following in his book, The UltraMind Solution.  "The most powerful tool you have to transform your health and improve your mood, mind, and metabolism is your fork!  Use it well and you will thrive.  Choose poorly and you will suffer."

"The varied components of a whole-foods diet not only taste better, make you feel better, and prevent disease, but they are literally medicine.  Mounting scientific evidence points to the power of food as medicine.  These "medicinal" foods are simply the foods our bodies evolved eating---fresh, unadulterated, slow-burning, high-fiber, vitamin- and mineral-rich, omega-3 plentiful, and phytonutrient-dense foods."  (Chapter 14, page 292)

"Think of nutrients as fertilizer for your brain.  Think of them as little helpers that improve communications and connections.  In a perfect world, no one would need supplements.  But given the stress of our modern life, the poor quality of our food supply, and the high load of toxins on our brains and bodies, we clearly need a basic daily supply of the raw materials for all our enzymes and biochemistry to run as designed."  (Chapter 15, page 304)

How to Optimize Your Nutrition for Vibrant Health

The path to better health is simple-and agreed upon by almost all scientists. In this week's UltraWellness podcast, Dr. Mark Hyman explains how to optimize your nutrition and which supplements are crucial for vibrant health.  This podcast is very good and I'm sorry I wasn't able to embed it in the post.

Chapter 7: Keys to UltraWellness, Food Sensitivity

A friend who knew I was battling depression recommended I read the book, The UltraMind Solution, by Mark Hyman, M.D. An excellent recommendation! Dr Hyman writes, "I call myself the 'accidental psychiatrist.' I never set out to be a brain or mood expert. In fact, my focus was more on how the body works as a whole system. And people saw me not to treat depression or autism or Alzheimer's, but to deal with chronic complaints and illnesses of the body. . .Over the years as I worked to correct the fundamental imbalances that are the cause of all disease (the seven keys to UltraWellness, which you will learn about in a moment), I discovered that mood and brain disorders would often magically disappear as I treated a patient's physical problems."

I have been dealing with depression since 1981, and I have a strong genetic predisposition for the illness. But I wanted to find out about other ways to help my brain heal, along with taking psychiatric medications. These are the seven keys to UltraWellness:
  1. Optimize Nutrition
  2. Balance Your Hormones
  3. Cool Off Inflammation
  4. Fix Your Digestion
  5. Enhance Detoxification
  6. Boost Energy Metabolism
  7. Calm Your Mind

Meet Dr. Mark Hyman as he talks about the
future of medicine and the Seven Keys to UltraWellness.

I was motivated to make major changes in my diet after reading this book.  Dr. Hyman recommends taking dairy and wheat out of your diet for at least six weeks to see if you feel better. If you read this book it will help you decide what diet changes may be helpful for you.  I have several allergies to weeds, trees, and grasses, and have responded well to immunotherapy allergy shots.  If you have an allergy to something it usually causes an immediate reaction; if you have a sensitivity it can take 2-5 days to cause a reaction in your immune system.  I don't have any allergies to foods, but I thought I may have some sensitivities since I am so allergic to other things.

My son and I had blood drawn for the IgG Comprehensive Food Sensitivity Assay test. It is also known as the ELISA test. Dr. Hyman talks about this test in the book. We found out my son is gluten intolerant, so that has changed our diet dramatically. After receiving the results of my ELISA test I have eliminated or cut back on all of the foods I am sensitive to. I am hoping this will help reduce the inflammation in my body and help heal my brain.  Dr Hyman educated me on this issue in his book.  I eat the +1 foods occasionally.

These are the results of my test: +4 is the highest sensitivity and +1 is the lowest sensitivity.

Alfalfa +1               Mustard +1                 Salmon +1                           Wheat +1
Cumin +1               Onion +1                    Seed, Caraway +1               Yeast, Baker's +3
Egg +4                   Paprika +1                 Squash, Yellow +1                Yeast, Brewer's +4
Garlic +1                Pumpkin +1               Tomato +2                            Zucchini +1
Milk, Cow's +1

If you are interested in finding out more about the IgG ELISA test, go to http://www.immunolabs.com/.  Their customer service was very helpful.

I also decided to eliminate white flour, white sugar, and most fats other than olive oil from my diet.  (I still put a little butter on my sweet potatoes and baked white potatoes. :)  My digestion is more efficient and I feel better after I eat.  It hasn't cured my depression, but I believe it is an important part of my treatment plan.  The changes in my diet, and exercise helped bring my cholesterol down from 216 to 163.  Yay!

Dr. Hyman includes The UltraMind Solution Companion Guide with his book.  It has a page in the, Set the Stage for Success, section which recommends items you may need to prepare the food in his recipes.  He calls them UltraEssentials.  Amazon.com has many of these items if you are interested.  I love to shop at Amazon.  They usually have what I need (or want) for the best prices.
